Boom Truck, Hydraulic Truck Crane, or All-Terrain: Choosing the Right Machine
Capacity ratings are the most misunderstood number in crane rental. A breakdown of the main mobile crane classes, how to read a load chart honestly, and how to match a machine to your site instead of your load.
When someone calls and says they need a 30-ton crane, they usually mean one of two things: the load weighs something in that neighborhood, or a contractor once used a 30-ton machine on a job that looked similar. Neither is a specification. Crane selection is a function of four things together — weight, radius, height, and access — and changing any one of them can change the machine.
Here is how the main classes of mobile crane differ in practice, and how to reason about which one your job actually needs.
The number on the crane is the best case, not the job case
A crane's advertised rating is its maximum capacity at minimum radius with full counterweight and full outrigger extension — essentially, the load hanging almost straight down beside the machine. It is a useful label and a terrible planning figure. Real picks happen at real radii, and capacity falls off fast.
A load chart is a grid: radius down one axis, boom length across the other, capacity in the cells. Pick the row for your radius and the column for the boom length you need to clear the obstacle, and the cell tells you what the machine can lift there. That capacity is gross — the weight of the block, hook, slings, spreader bars, and any jib deducts from it before your load counts. It also assumes level ground, full outrigger spread, and the specified counterweight. Change any of those and you use a different chart.
The practical rule: a crane whose chart says you are at 90 percent of capacity is a crane that leaves you no room for a heavier-than-documented load, an awkward center of gravity, or a wind gust. Good planning targets a comfortable margin, and that often means one class up from the arithmetic minimum.
Boom trucks: fast, compact, and often exactly right
A boom truck is a hydraulic telescopic boom mounted on a commercial truck chassis. Typical capacities run from around 10 to 40 tons. They drive at highway speed, need no assist truck or assembly, and set up in minutes.
- Best for: HVAC unit changeouts, spa and hot tub placements, roof material loading, sign installation, generator and transformer sets, and light steel.
- Strengths: tight urban access, minimal setup time, low cost per hour, and often a deck for hauling rigging or the load itself.
- Limits: shorter boom and lower capacity at long radius. If the load must reach far over a structure, a boom truck runs out of chart quickly.
For a large share of Southern California residential and light commercial work, a boom truck is the correct answer, and choosing it over a larger machine saves real money on both the hourly rate and the mobilization.
Hydraulic truck cranes: more chart, still road-legal
Hydraulic truck cranes sit on a purpose-built carrier with a separate operator cab for the crane. Capacities commonly range from 40 to well over 100 tons, with longer main booms and jib options that extend reach substantially.
- Best for: structural steel erection, precast panels, heavy mechanical equipment, tank and vessel sets, and long-radius picks over buildings.
- Strengths: far better capacity retention at distance, greater hook height, and the ability to handle multi-pick days without repositioning.
- Considerations: larger outrigger footprint, heavier axle loads, and sometimes counterweight delivered on a separate truck, which adds mobilization cost and setup time.
All-terrain and rough-terrain cranes: when the ground is the problem
All-terrain cranes combine highway travel with multi-axle steering and off-road capability. Rough-terrain cranes are not highway legal and must be trailered, but they are compact, maneuverable on unimproved ground, and excellent inside a fenced construction site.
Choose these when the setup area is dirt, graded pad, or uneven fill, when the crane must reposition repeatedly across a site, or when crab steering is needed to squeeze into a footprint a truck chassis cannot reach. The trade-off is transport cost and slower mobilization.
The rigging is part of the crane
Selecting a machine without selecting the rigging is half a decision. Below-the-hook equipment changes both the capacity math and the feasibility of the pick.
- Spreader and equalizer beams control sling angle and protect loads that cannot take compression, but they add weight and reduce available headroom.
- Sling angle matters enormously: the same slings at 30 degrees carry far more tension than at 60 degrees, and tension is what breaks things.
- Synthetic round slings protect finished surfaces like spa shells and architectural panels; wire rope and chain handle heat, edges, and abrasion.
- Tag lines control rotation. On a windy Santa Ana afternoon they are not optional.
A worked example
A 6,800-pound rooftop package unit needs to land 55 feet from the nearest place a crane can set up, on a two-story building with a 28-foot parapet, in a strip center where one parking lane can be closed. The arithmetic says 3.4 tons. The chart says something very different: at a 55-foot radius with enough boom to clear the parapet and swing safely, a 30-ton boom truck may be marginal, while a 45- or 60-ton hydraulic truck crane sits comfortably inside its chart with margin for the rigging and a heavier-than-labeled unit.
Now move the setup 20 feet closer by removing a landscape planter and negotiating a second parking space. The radius drops to 35 feet, the boom truck comes back into play, and the day gets cheaper. That is the trade contractors should be making at planning time — site access is a cost lever, and it is usually a bigger one than the hourly rate.
Questions worth asking any crane provider
- What load chart line are you planning to, and what percentage of capacity does that put us at?
- Is the operator NCCCO certified, and is a qualified rigger and signal person included?
- What outrigger spread does the plan assume, and does the site support it?
- What is included in the hourly rate — travel, setup, fuel, rigging, permits?
- What is the contingency if the load weighs more than documented?
A provider who can answer those quickly and specifically is planning your lift. One who quotes a tonnage and a price without asking about radius and access is guessing, and guesses show up as change orders.
