Mobile Cranes vs. All-Terrain Cranes: What's the Difference?

Every crane on wheels gets called a "mobile crane," but the differences between a hydraulic truck crane and a true all-terrain machine change cost, setup time, and whether the crane can even reach your load. Here is how the two classes actually compare — and which projects each one wins.

Ask three contractors what a "mobile crane" is and you will get three answers. To one it is the boom truck that sets rooftop HVAC units. To another it is the 100-ton machine that showed up with a support truck full of counterweight. Technically both are correct — mobile crane is an umbrella category covering any crane that travels on rubber tires under its own power — but that vagueness costs real money. Booking the wrong class means either paying for capacity you never touch, or watching a crane arrive that physically cannot reach your load from where it can legally park.

The clearest way to cut through the confusion is to compare the two machines contractors actually choose between in Southern California: the hydraulic truck-mounted mobile crane, and the all-terrain crane. They overlap in capacity but differ almost everywhere else — chassis design, road behavior, setup footprint, and price per day. Understanding those differences tells you which one your project needs before you make the call.

What a Mobile Crane Actually Is

In everyday jobsite language, "mobile crane" usually means a hydraulic truck crane: a telescoping boom mounted on a commercial highway chassis, driven from a standard truck cab, with outriggers that deploy at the work site. These machines are built to live on the road. They run at highway speed, meet standard axle-weight rules on most routes, and can be dispatched across a metro area on short notice without a convoy.

That road-first design defines their character. Steering is limited to the front axles, so the machine needs a conventional turning radius and reasonably clean approach. Ground clearance is modest. Once set up on outriggers and properly cribbed, though, a hydraulic truck crane is a fast, precise, and comparatively inexpensive lifting tool. Setup on a prepared surface commonly runs 20 to 45 minutes, and for many boom-truck-class jobs, less.

Where the Mobile Crane Wins

  • Paved, accessible sites — parking lots, streets, finished commercial pads, and industrial yards
  • Short-duration lifts where mobilization time is a large share of total cost
  • Multi-stop days: several small lifts across different addresses in one shift
  • Jobs where road permits and escort requirements need to stay minimal
  • Loads well inside the chart at moderate radius, rather than extreme reach at maximum capacity

What Makes an All-Terrain Crane Different

An all-terrain crane is a purpose-built crane carrier, not a crane bolted to a truck. It rides on a multi-axle chassis — commonly three to nine axles — with all-wheel drive and, critically, all-wheel or rear-axle steering. That steering system lets a 60-foot machine crab sideways, pivot in a tight radius, and thread into positions a truck crane simply cannot approach. Higher ground clearance and driven axles let it move across compacted dirt, gravel, and graded pads under its own power.

It is still a road-legal machine, which is what separates it from a rough-terrain crane. An all-terrain travels to the site on the highway, then works in conditions a highway truck would bog down in. That dual capability is the whole point — and the reason it costs more.

The tradeoff is logistics. Larger all-terrain cranes exceed legal axle weight when fully loaded, so counterweight and sometimes the boom head ship separately on support trailers. That means additional trucks, additional permits, occasionally escorts, and assembly time on site. Setup for a large all-terrain is measured in hours, not minutes, and the footprint with outriggers fully extended can exceed 25 feet square.

Where the All-Terrain Wins

  • Unimproved or partially graded sites where the crane must travel over dirt
  • Heavy capacity at long radius — steel erection, tower components, large tank and vessel sets
  • Confined urban sites where all-wheel steering is the only way to position the machine
  • Multi-day projects where the setup time amortizes across many picks
  • Lifts requiring luffing jib or heavy counterweight configurations beyond truck crane range

Side-by-Side: The Differences That Change Your Quote

Chassis and Maneuverability

A truck crane steers like a truck. An all-terrain steers like a machine designed by people who have been stuck in a construction entrance. If your site requires backing 200 feet down a narrow easement, or setting up between a building face and a curb line with three feet of margin, the all-terrain's rear-steer is not a luxury — it is the difference between a lift and a cancelled day.

Ground Conditions and Bearing Pressure

Both classes concentrate enormous load into their outrigger pads, and both require engineered cribbing on anything softer than sound concrete. The difference is travel, not support. A truck crane needs a hard, continuous surface to reach its working position. An all-terrain can drive across the pad to get there. On a site with fresh fill, trenched utilities, or an unfinished slab, that distinction decides the machine.

Setup Time and Day Rate

Setup time is billable time. A hydraulic truck crane that sets three rooftop units and demobilizes in four hours will almost always beat an all-terrain on total cost for that scope, even if both have the capacity. Conversely, on a two-week steel job, the all-terrain's longer initial setup disappears into the schedule while its reach and capacity keep the crew productive.

Capacity Versus Usable Capacity

This is where most bookings go wrong. Rated capacity is the number at minimum radius with full counterweight — a figure you will likely never use. What matters is chart capacity at your actual radius, in your actual configuration. A 40-ton truck crane may only offer four or five tons at 80 feet of radius. An all-terrain of similar nominal rating with heavier counterweight will hold far more out at distance. Always compare cranes at the radius your lift requires, never at their headline rating.

The right question is never "how big is the crane?" It is "what will it hold at my radius, from the only place it can legally set up?"

When to Use a Mobile Crane: Project by Project

HVAC Installation and Rooftop Mechanical

Rooftop mechanical work is the mobile crane's home ground. Packaged rooftop units typically run 800 to 6,000 pounds, and the controlling constraint is almost never weight — it is radius. The crane sets up in the parking lot or fire lane and must reach over a parapet to a curb somewhere on the roof. That distance, plus building height, defines the pick. A hydraulic truck crane with a 100- to 150-foot boom handles the overwhelming majority of these lifts, sets up in under an hour, and can swap out three or four units in a single shift. Bringing an all-terrain to a standard RTU changeout is paying convoy logistics for capacity that sits unused.

Commercial Construction and Tenant Improvement

Commercial sites tend to be paved early and stay paved, which suits truck cranes. Setting joists on a single-story shell, placing generators and transformers, hoisting curtain wall panels, lifting materials to an upper floor, dropping in elevator equipment — these are moderate loads at moderate radius on hard surfaces. Truck cranes handle them efficiently and can be scheduled around other trades because they mobilize fast. The all-terrain earns its place on the same site only when the structure gets tall enough or the members heavy enough that chart capacity at radius runs out.

Spa, Pool, and Residential Backyard Placement

Residential placement is a reach problem disguised as a weight problem. A loaded spa weighs a fraction of what any mobile crane can lift, but it has to clear a house, mature landscaping, and often a power drop, then land within inches on a pad in the back yard. The crane sets up in the street. What matters is boom length, the clearance path, and precise operator control at long radius — not tonnage. A properly sized hydraulic truck crane with an operator who has done hundreds of these is the correct tool.

Heavy Lifting, Steel, and Industrial Work

The line shifts when loads climb into the tens of tons or the pick point sits far from any place a truck can park. Structural steel erection, tilt-up panel setting, large chiller and cooling tower replacements, tank and vessel installation, and bridge or infrastructure components frequently exceed what a truck crane holds at the necessary radius. Those are all-terrain jobs — and sometimes crawler jobs beyond that. On unimproved industrial sites, the all-terrain's ability to reposition across dirt between picks adds productivity a truck crane cannot match at any price.

How to Decide Before You Call

  1. Verify the true load weight from a submittal, shipping ticket, or scale — not an estimate.
  2. Measure the radius: horizontal distance from the crane's center of rotation to the landing point, from where the crane can actually set up.
  3. Confirm the setup surface and whether the crane must travel over unpaved ground to reach it.
  4. Identify obstructions overhead and along the swing path — power lines, trees, parapets, adjacent structures.
  5. Note the total number of picks and how many days the crane is needed.
  6. Send weights, dimensions, address, and site photos to dispatch and let the load chart make the call.

Those six items are what a competent crane company needs to size the machine correctly. Everything else — model names, tonnage ratings, boom brand — follows from them. If you supply the numbers, a good dispatcher will often recommend a smaller and cheaper crane than you expected, because the chart says it works.

The Bottom Line

Mobile cranes and all-terrain cranes are not competing products so much as different answers to different site conditions. The hydraulic truck crane is the fast, economical choice for paved, accessible work at moderate radius — which describes most HVAC, commercial, and residential placement in Southern California. The all-terrain exists for the jobs that break those assumptions: rough ground, tight urban positioning, and serious weight far from the machine.
